Por si vas a ser líder

El líder nace, pero también se hace. Con la adecuada disciplina, podemos los líderes motivar y capacitar a otras personas para que se atrevan a tomar las riendas y a dirigir. Es más, el buen líder debe conocer su indelegable compromiso de buscar e identificar a esas personas que capacitará para la sucesión. Además de ayudar a otras personas a encontrar su vocación, el líder estará dejando huellas que perdurarán aun cuando ya no esté. Ese es el legado.

Me decía mi mamá cuando yo era pequeño que todo lo que llevara mi nombre, me representaría por el resto de mi vida. Eso me lo decía para enseñarme a ser celoso y cuidadoso al preparar y entregar los trabajos de la escuela. Con el tiempo aprendí que mi nombre lo llevaba mucho más que el papel. Mi nombre lo lleva mi presentación ante el público. Lo llevan las relaciones que establezco y promuevo. Lo lleva la pasión con la que trabajo. Lo lleva lo que creo y lo que demuestro con mis acciones. Mi nombre lo lleva la persona que inspiro y a la que educo para que siga adelante. Mi nombre lo lleva toda persona a quien ayudé a crecer. Mi nombre lo lleva el líder a quien le abrí espacio y preparé para que hoy ejecute mejor que yo, para orgullo mío.

Por eso, como nos toca inspirar y preparar a los demás, te recomiendo lo siguiente si vas a ser líder.

1. Si vas a ser líder, dedícate a aprender. Nunca dejarás de aprender si valoras la importancia de saber para contribuir con conocimiento. No lo sabes todo y tampoco lo sabrás todo. La humildad te dejará saber que, independientemente de la posición, tienes algo que aprender.

2. Si vas a ser líder, pon oído en tierra. Escucha a la gente. Escucha sus inquietudes y sus recomendaciones. Sé inclusivo y abre las puertas a la participación de las demás personas. Además de enseñarles que su colaboración es indispensable, les inspirarás por tu consideración.

3. Si vas a ser líder, da tú el ejemplo. Enróllate las mangas. Demuestra cómo se hace con tu acción. Demuestra que tú también eres parte del equipo. También inspirarás con tu ejemplo.

4. Si vas a ser líder, sé empático y sé firme. La empatía y la firmeza no son enemigas. La empatía te permite identificarte con los sentimientos de las otras personas. Te deja ponerte en su lugar para entender lo que vive. Aun así, comprender la realidad no impide que seas una persona firme y justa con tus decisiones.

5. Si vas a ser líder, unifica y no destruyas. Tu palabra no es la única. Tu postura no es la única. Tu visión es una de muchas. Crea puentes que unan entre las múltiples visiones. Da el ejemplo de equidad, respeto, diversidad y unidad.

If you are going to be a leader.

Leaders are born, but they are also made. With the proper discipline, leaders can motivate and teach other people to lead. As a matter of fact, good leaders must understand their undeniable commitment to identify those individuals who will be trained to take over at some point. In addition to helping others find their vocation, leaders will leave footprints that will last long after they are gone. That's their legacy.

My mom once told me that everything that carried my name would represent me for the rest of my life. She would say that so that I'd be careful when writing and submitting my work in school. With time, I learned that my name is in many more places than just on paper. My name is in my presentation to the public. it is in the relationships that I establish and promote. It is in the passion with which I work. It is in what I believe and show with my actions. My name is in the people whom I inspire and educate to be successful. My name is in every person whom I helped to grow. My name is in the leader whom I helped open his or her own space and prepared to be better than me, for my own pride.

So, since we must inspire and prepare others, I suggest the following if you are going to be a leader.

1. If you're going to be a leader, you must learn. You will never stop learning if you value the importance of contributing with your knowledge. You don't know everything and won't know everything. Humility will let you know that, regardless of your position, there is something to learn.

2. If you're going to be a leader, you must listen. Listen to people. Listen to their needs and recommendations. Be inclusive and open doors to the participation of others. You'll be teaching them that their collaboration is necessary, and will inspire them with your consideration.

3. If you're going to be a leader, be the example. Roll up your sleeves. Show them how it's done and that you are also part of the team. You will also inspire with your example.

4. If you're going to be a leader, be empathetic and firm. Empathy and firmness are not enemies. Empathy will let you identify with the feelings of others. It lets you put yourself in others' shoes. But, understanding the reality of others, does not mean that you can't be firm and fair in your decisions.

5. If you're going to be a leader, unify; don't destroy. Your word is not the only word. Your position is not the sole position. Build bridges to join between the different stories. Be an example of equity, respect, diversity, and unity.
